As commercial contractors in Rochester, NY, we spend a lot of time installing and repairing hardwood flooring. Hardwood is an amazing material to use for floors – it looks great and can significantly add to a home’s value… but only if it’s properly installed and maintained. Hardwood floors require care and maintenance to keep up. Without the right treatment, they can start becoming damaged quickly.
Here are a few tips to help your hardwood floors have a long life!
Five Important Tips for Maintaining Your Hardwood Floors
1. Always seal the wood immediately after installation
Wood is very permeable, and it will become damaged quickly if it isn’t properly sealed. There are a lot of options on the market, but we recommend a polyurethane coat. PU is a clear slightly rubbery plastic which is excellent at deflecting impact damage, while also preventing any moisture from making its way into the wood.
2. Always protect the floor from heavy furniture
Never put heavy pieces of furniture, like couches, directly onto the floor – particularly if they’re likely to move around from use. Always put them on something like a rug, or else put felt protectors on the feet to shield the floor from damage. Otherwise, they’ll start scratching up the wood in short order.
3. Sweep and mop frequently
Even with protective coatings, it’s relatively easy for everyday dirt and grime to work their way into a hardwood floor. Frequently cleaning is a must, if you want your floor to last!
4. Put dirt mats inside and outside of every door
People tracking mud and dirt indoors will cause a lot of problems for hardwood floors and increase your need to clean them. You can help prevent this by putting mats down both inside and outside of any exterior door that leads into a room with hardwood flooring. This reduces the amount of grime that makes its way inside.
5. Re-finish the wood every year
Make a note in your calendar/app when your hardwood floor is installed. Then, around the time of each anniversary, have it re-finished and re-sealed. The finishing will wear down over time, so you need to periodically put down a new coat.
